Campaigns are designed according to the message, the aim, the client and the target audience. Certain projects are almost entirely aimed at building the capacity of community leadership, while others may have a component of leadership development, with the focus being mainly on personal development of members of the community. We have a well-established studio division that oversees the development and publication of any material used during project roll-outs (from core publications to websites, advertisements, posters, leaflets and other media items). The studio consists of several educationalists, writers, an in-house graphic designer and a stable of freelance editors, proofreaders, translators and photographers, etc.

Our methodology with regard to text development is based on years of research into cognitive learning processes, and is designed to draw in readers, particularly those with little or no formal education. We employ lifelike narratives to spark the end-user’s interest and to emphasise the relevance of the material. The kind of communicative text that ESST develops lends itself to shared learning – sparking vibrant discussion and the creation of new knowledge.

We have produced a range of materials to suit the target audience and the message. The following are included by way of example:

Publications stand alone in terms of the comprehensiveness of their content, but we do not believe that information should be separated from context or from the skills required to bring transformation. Hence, ESST conducts educational and awareness campaigns, using the material we develop to underpin our messages. We have conducted our interventions in primary and senior schools, in communities and in hospitals. They have been conducted in communities within a city, in provinces and many, if not the majority, have been conducted nationally – in all nine provinces and all the official languages of our country. We train our facilitators, who then train government communicators, community stakeholders and leaders from government, church and the non-profit sector to carry the messages of the campaign to the communities. Because working with community-based leaders and project stakeholders is vital to the success of our projects, our interventions include the development of training programmes and facilitator’s guides.  We are therefore expert in developing training programmes based on manuals.
