Much has happened since the last South African elections. Thus we approached the 2009 elections a very different nation from that of five years ago and a fresh and current approach was needed in order for voter education to be more relevant.
The project was initiated towards the beginning of November 2008 and completed in March 2009, culminating in the printing and distribution of a 12-page, A5 comic booklet, aimed at being as inclusive as possible, in all aspects, of all South African demographics. Whilst the 2009 voter education end-user publication loosely followed the format of the 2004 voter registration education end-user publication, it differed quite substantially in terms of look and feel.
The publication takes the reader step-by-step through the various processes involved with voting in the 2009 Democratic elections, as well as the rights and responsibilities which go hand-in-hand with living in a democracy, in a manner that is visually enticing and representative of our diverse nation. Furthermore, the publication stimulated and encouraged proactive thinking around the following core messages:
- What is democracy?
- What is an election about?
- What does the Constitution say?
- Why is it important that all South Africans vote?
- Fair elections and freedom of choice (rights)
- Informed decision-making
By addressing the above issues, South Africans across the demographic spectrum were made aware of their rights and responsibilities as citizens. ESST wishes to thank the IEC for the opportunity to partner with it in building towards the future of South Africa.
