Creating Employment for the Unemployed

You may be one of the millions of unemployed young people, feeling despondent because you cannot find a job, despite your best attempts to find one. The result of this is that you find yourself in a situation where you feel stranded and do not know how to get out of it! You might have left school early and think that that might be the reason why you cannot find a job or, even worse, you might have a degree but still cannot find a job!

If this is the situation in which you find yourself, then our employment creation programme is for you, wherever you are and whatever scholastic/tertiary education you might have.

Have you ever thought about the possibility of creating your own job instead of looking for one? How about becoming an entrepreneur?

Did you know that South Africa occupies the last position in Sub-Saharan Africa when it comes to entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial activity? Let me give you an example of the lack of entrepreneurial activity in our country. Foreigners come to our country, many of whom cannot even speak the language, set up their small shops and within three years manage to establish a profit-making enterprise. In the meantime, they succeed in carving out a living and are self-sufficient.

It is also noteworthy that the individuals at car parking areas are mostly foreigners. Do speak to them next time and you will find out that many of them have degrees, even advanced degrees, yet they are only too thankful to have an income, prepared to endure rain and cold, to further their ambition. I have not met one of them who wants to be a car guard for the rest her/his life!

There is a lesson to be learned from the above examples. There is no such thing as inferior or superior work. If you are diligent, honest, hardworking, have lots of will-power and know what you want to become, you will succeed, as you know that success brings even more success and failure is not even crossing your mind!

People flock to the cities in the hope to find a job, only to become disheartened and destitute. My advice is: Stay where you are and learn to look anew at possibilities of generating income. These possibilities are right there where you are. It is your thinking which have to change!

You might have heard about the 4th Industrial Revolution, with computers doing more and more what was earlier done by humans. It is not to be feared, however. The human interface will always be in demand (think of your tourism industry) and so your skills will be. Just find the opportunities and learn and grow how you can also apply technology to make your enterprise more successful. Your cellphone and all the possibilities it offers, is part of the Industrial Revolution and can indeed help you in so many ways, e.g. to source information, to create your own social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) to advertise your enterprise and communicate with and learn from others. It is up to you to make the best use of them!

I sincerely hope that you will thoroughly enjoy working through our entrepreneurship programme. Ideally, do it with one or two other individuals, be they friends or family members, because the content is meant to be shared and discussed. It is out of these discussions that ideas will come forward, which will guide your thinking on what you can do to earn an income.

I hope we have now finally reached a point where you are no longer going to look for a job, but are going to create one for yourself and through which others can benefit as well, and the community at large!
